Arkansas Spotlight
One Year after the Fall of Roe v. Wade
June 9th, 2023
This June, we are spotlighting the destructive extremists in the anti-choice movement and the pivotal work of those fighting back to restore reproductive rights.
Today, we highlight anti-choice leader Mary Bentley, a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives and an original co-sponsor of the 2019 near-total abortion ban that was triggered after the Dobbs v. Jackson decision. As a direct result, in 2023 an estimated 3,000+ Arkansans will be forced to travel to another state for their abortion care.
Just recently, Bentley led a successful effort to construct a “monument to the unborn” on the Arkansas State Capitol grounds. For Bentley, the monument is a celebration of the anti-choice movement; for us, it should serve as a reminder of how far we have to go
However, there is hope. Today we want to lift up the work of the Progressive Arkansas Women PAC (PAWPAC), an organization dedicated to supporting and electing women leaders who are committed to reproductive freedom and women’s economic and social equality. By recruiting, supporting, and funding progressive women candidates in local and state elections, PAWPAC is changing the face of Arkansas politics.
